Imagine turning your love for the English language and your passion for teaching into a rewarding career. In Italy, and indeed across the globe, numerous paths can lead you to fulfilling this dream.
But what are these paths, and how do they differ?
Let’s have a look a the different ways you could realize your dream of teaching English in Italy, with a specific focus on teaching English to children.
1. Teaching English in Italy as a school teacher:
The traditional path, leading full classes at a public or private school. You follow the curriculum but bring your own flair. Classroom management and standardized testing are key skills. The school provides structure and resources.
Pros: stable income, job security, and structured work hours
Cons: Difficult to enter the profession later in life unless you have the necessary credentials. Teachers must adhere to curriculum standards and administrative policies, limiting flexibility. Teamwork is very rare, innovation is mostly frowned upon and confrontation (among colleagues and with families) is not unusual.
2. ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher:
Work for a language school and provide individual or group lessons as required.
Pros: The school takes care of all organisational details
Cons: The pay is low and turnover is very high. Training and support is normally very limited and you will be expected to create plans and resources for all your students, all by yourself.
3. Private Tutor:
Work one-on-one with students needing personalized attention and flexible scheduling. In person and/or online.
Pros: Tutors set their schedules and rates, offering great flexibility, and they retain 100% of the money earned (after taxes).
Cons: Not ideal for young children. Impossible to scale, there are just so many 1:1 lessons you can offer in a week. Earnings can be unpredictable, depending on the number of students and seasonal demand. Feeling of isolation as you work entirely on your own. Need to create lesson plans and content for every student.
4. Typical Franchise Owner:
Open a location to offer the services provided by the franchise and hire teachers to deliver the courses. You get the curriculum, marketing, and operations blueprint. It’s a significant investment but lower risk than an independent startup
Pros: proven business model and brand reputation, lower risk than an independent startup, you receive training and support also on marketing and business management aspects
Cons: it’s very capital intensive, the entry fees and the setup of the location require a substantial investment (normally more than 50K euros); hiring and retaining several teachers might prove a challenge and as a result you might have to compromise on quality
5. Teacher/Franchise Owner (Learn with Mummy):
Set up your local teaching business without the need to have a dedicated location. You get the curriculum, marketing, and operations blueprint.
Pros: proven business model and brand reputation, lower risk than an independent startup and a typical franchising. You receive training and support also on marketing and management aspects. You collaborate with a team of likeminded teachers who operate in different areas. Complete flexibility in terms of schedule. You deliver only group sessions, with high margin for worked hour.
Cons: it requires a small investment of money and time (for the training). It requires you to manage both the teaching and the communication and organisational aspects. It works best for self motivated persons.

What does Learn with Mummy do?
Learn with Mummy offers English Playgroups for children 0-10 year old.
Most specifically, the playgroups for young children, 0-3 or 3-6yo, are conducted with children and parents.
We believe parents are a teacher’s best allies, and together we help children love the English language and every experience they associate to it.
Of course all our activities are play based, and very innovative at that. Get in ouch to learn what a play based teaching methodology is, and how it is used to foster a natural acquisition of a second language.
